ATLANTA -- The investigation into Atlanta Public Schools concluded that CRCT cheating occurred at Perkerson Elementary School in 2009.
Investigators concluded that principal Mable Johnson cheated on the 2009 CRCT. She did not offer an explanation for the erasures on tests and refused to answer the questions posed to her, according to the report.
According to Dr. James Boyce, the school’s education specialist, he witnessed several teachers giving students the correct answers during their testing period. When he told Johnson, she "blew him off."
Another teacher, Patricia Williams, told investigators she collected tests in a specific order and noticed that they were out of order the next morning. Williams admitted that she erased stray marks; however, she claimed she did not change students' answers. She also said she was "surprised" that numerous "at risk" students passed the CRCT in 2009.
Jocelyn Mack, a first grade teacher, said she was surprised that two of her students passed the 2009 CRCT. According to the investigation, one of the students sat under a table during administration of the CRCT, then randomly filled in answers and still passed.
Only Johnson and testing coordinator Tony Allen had access to the tests. Allen admitted to erasing stray marks, but said that any cheating “would have to be Principal Johnson because [I] did not do it."
Johnson pleaded the Fifth Amendment during the investigation.
