Councilman H. Lamar Willis Hosts Winter Wonderland Soiree for APS students, today at City Hall

 

Atlanta – Atlanta City Councilmember H. Lamar Willis will host a “Winter Wonderland Soiree” on December 20 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the Atlanta City Hall atrium. 

The holiday celebration is open to Atlanta Public Schools students and their parents and to all City of Atlanta employees.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The free event allows city officials to show their support for APS and its students and to encourage them to continue to press forward in the new year. 

For the last eight years, Willis has organized holiday celebrations for groups ranging from senior citizens to at-risk youths to public safety employees.

Deal appoints new Ga. EPD director

Deal appoints new Ga. EPD director

ATLANTA -- Jud Turner has been appointed director of the Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR board made the appointment official this week after Gov. Nathan Deal nominated Turner for the post.

Turner replaces F. Allen Barnes, who is leaving to work in the private sector.

Turner is a founding partner in the law firm Turner, Bachman & Garrett LLC and public affairs firm Georgia360 LLC. He was former Gov. Sonny Perdue's lead attorney and represented the governor during negotiations with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service during the state's severe drought.

Turner has also served as general counsel to the Georgia Department of Education.

ATLANTA -- What's it like to be a principal in Fulton County?

More than 60 residents got the opportunity to learn the answer to this question when they were selected to be "Principal for a Day" at schools throughout the district. They will reflect upon their experiences during a recap session at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18 at the school system's Administrative Center near East Point.

Now in its fourth year, the Principal for a Day program allows local business leaders to step into the role of school administrator and discover the challenges and rewards such a job presents. A list of participants can be found on the Fulton schools website.

ASO to honor Metro Atlanta music teachers

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will hold an appreciation ceremony for more than 180 Atlanta-area music teachers Friday evening.

The teachers will be recognized at 7 p.m. by ASO president Stanley Romanstein. Afterward, the instructors will attend the evening's concert featuring the music of Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov and Mussorgsky.

ASO cellist Joel Dallow will also receive a special award from Romanstein for his arts education advocacy work throughout Georgia.

Both the 8 p.m. concert and the preceding reception will take place at the Woodruff Arts Center, 1280 Peachtree Street NE, Midtown.
