Officer shoots at suspect after being pinned by truck

EAST POINT, Ga. (WXIA) -- Investigators said a police officer fired at a truck after the officer was pinned between the truck and his police car in East Point Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said it happened near the intersection of Washington Road and Ben Hill Road when the officer learned of a stolen truck nearby. When the officer stopped the red pickup truck, the truck driver tried to flee by pinning the officer between the truck and the police cruiser as the officer was getting out of his car.

The officer said that since the truck driver was attempting to kill him, he fired his service revolver at the truck multiple times. The driver of the truck was not hit by the gunfire.

After striking the officer, the truck fled from the apartment complex, crossing Washington Road. Another officer began following the suspect vehicle. The truck then crashed into a gray pickup and a blue convertible. Two suspects jumped out of the truck and ran. They were caught a short time later by East Point officers.

Two men in the gray pickup were taken to a local hospital as a precaution. Officials said the officer would be okay. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation.
