East Point officials dispute 'most dangerous suburb' title

EAST POINT, Ga. (WXIA) – East Point has been named the "most dangerous suburb" in the nation, according to a new survey from the real estate blog Movoto.com. City officials in East Point beg to differ.

The site points to crime data for 120 suburban areas around the nation, and cites its earlier survey naming the most dangerous small cities around the nation, when comparing the regions of the nation where dangerous communities area.

In this ranking, the site looked at the FBI's 2012 uniform crime report for seven main types of crime – murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft and vehicle theft.

Coming in at the top of Movoto's list, residents of East Point, they said, faced a 1-in-8 chance of being the victim of a crime, and said that was the worst of any place they surveyed. They said East Point ranked number one in total crime and property crime, with more than 12,000 crimes per 100,000 residents in 2012.

Movoto's research said the city was no better off when murders are examined, ranking second with 34 murders per 100,000 residents in 2012. The city ranked second for violent crimes, with 1,198 per 100,000 residents in 2012.

A press release from East Point Chief of Police Woodrow Blue disputed the 2012 data, insisting the data was hypothetical and had not been empirically validated.

"The information described by Movoto.com as 2012 crime statistics for the City of East Point is wrong," the release said. "The City of East Point Police Department strongly refutes the city being described as the 'most dangerous suburb' in the United States."

Blue pointed to crime statistics from the FBI Uniform Crime Report and said there were only 12 homicides and 4,267 total crimes in East Point during 2012. He says the total number of crimes includes 3,843 property crimes.
