Fulton County observes Fire Prevention Week

ATLANTA -- Fulton County’s Fire Rescue Department is holding several events in the community as a part of Fire Prevention Week, October 6-12, 2013. This year’s theme is “Prevent Kitchen Fires!”

According to the National Fire Protection Association, two of every five home fires start in the kitchen. Residents are encouraged to learn more about how they can prevent kitchen fires.

Join Fulton Fire Rescue at one of the following events:

  • Monday, October 7 – 10 a.m. - 1p.m., Harriet G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility.  Event will include the Fire Engine, Information Booth, and Fire Safety House Demonstration. 

 

  • Tuesday, October 8 – 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.-  Southwest Regional Library, Information Booth Fire Truck Demonstration.

ATLANTA -- In celebration of the release of the "Colorful Adventures" coloring and activity book line featuring African-American characters, Goldest Karat Publishing is throwing a coloring party from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rosel Fann Recreation Center, 365 Cleveland Avenue SE, Atlanta!

For only $5, your child will receive the coloring pages of his/her choice, crayons, snacks, refreshments, an afternoon of coloring fun, and the chance to win cool prizes!

ATLANTA -- Now that its fall and the weather is cooling down to a decent level and the rain has finally calmed down, this is a great weekend to get out with the family.

Well since this Saturday is also National States Park Day, this is the perfect time to get out with the family for some outdoor fun.

On Sept. 28, you will not pay for admission or for parking to see some of the most beautiful natural beauty that is the Georgia State Parks.

What makes this even better is that there are a ton of events and volunteer acts you can do at the state parks on this day as well.

Fulton's Fall SPARC Atlanta Clinics seek to enhance the health and quality of life for older adults

ATLANTA -- Fulton County’s Fall SPARC (Sickness Prevention Achieved through Regional Collaboration) Atlanta preventive healthcare screenings for older adults begin on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

Citizens who participate in SPARC Atlanta clinics can take advantage of health screenings, nutrition counseling and health education. Since the initiation of SPARC Atlanta in 2006, more than 7,300 older adults have visited SPARC Clinics to obtain health screenings as well as obtain information regarding Medicare Assistance, employment assistance, Food Stamp Assistance, nutrition education and dental education.

Fulton County Cooperative Extension sponsors free workshop for budding entrepreneurs

ATLANTA -- Have you ever considered starting your own home-based business? Fulton County Cooperative Extension will sponsor a free workshop on Starting a Home-Based Business on Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System’s Central Library, 1 Margaret Mitchell Square, Suite 109, Atlanta.

Participants will gain valuable information to help them start and maintain a successful home-based business. Specific topics will include how to identify fraud and scams billed as business opportunities, space and time needs, identifying factors that contribute to success and much more.  

Fulton County Cooperative Extension hosts monthly classes on a variety of topics such as nutrition, financial management, diabetes and gardening. Classes are held in locations throughout the county.  Call 404-332-2400 for more information.

Seminal Photography Exhibition ‘Posing Beauty’ Makes Southeast Debut at Spelman College

The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art is the first institution in the Southeast to present the nationally touring exhibition, “Posing Beauty in African American Culture.” Featuring more than 75 photographs by leading, emerging, and amateur photographers, “Posing Beauty” explores ways contemporary understanding of beauty has been informed by the works of photographers and artists dating from 1890 to the present.  The exhibition will be on view Sept. 5 through Dec. 7, 2013. The exhibition is curated by Deborah Willis, Ph.D., one of the nation's leading historians of African-American photography.
