Fake East Point cop pulls over driver on I-285

EAST POINT, Ga. -- East Point police said someone is impersonating a member of the force, and they are asking for the public's help in identifying him.

The suspect pulled over a car on Interstate 285 south just before the Camp Creek Parkway exit on Feb. 2.

East Point Police Lt. Cliff Chandler said the suspect was driving a brown Ford Crown Victoria, possibly from the early 2000s. He tapped the back bumper of the victim's car while pulling it over.

The suspect told the victim he was a police officer conducting a traffic stop. The victim suspected the man was not a cop and began asking questions. The suspect then ran back to the Crown Victoria and drove away.

The victim reported the incident to East Point police on Feb. 10. He described the phony officer as a black man in his early to mid 40s, about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, wearing dark navy pants, a gold police-style shirt, a baseball cap and a black EMT jacket. He had a police-style gun belt and radio, but no badge.

Chandler said the department and Crime Stoppers Atlanta are offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest in this case.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS. Anonymous tips can be left at crimestoppersatlanta.org.
