ATLANTA -- A mother and her boyfriend have been sentenced to life plus 15 years in prison for killing the woman's two-year-old son.

Nikita Moore, 25, and Reginald Johnson, 27 were found guilty and sentenced this week.

According to information presented in court, the child, Makel Moore-Thompkins, died at South Fulton Medical Center on Dec. 10, 2010. Moore-Thompkins' body had more than 40 new and old injuries, indicating a history of abuse, according to Fulton County District Attorney's spokeswoman Yvette Jones.

When Moore-Thompkins was taken to the hospital, he had a fractured skull, bleeding on his brain and facial bruises, Jones said. The defendants told investigators they hit the child with a belt while trying to potty-train him. A subsequent search of their home found pillows and sheets stained with the child's blood, according to Jones.

Moore and Johnson were arrested in February 2011 on charges of murder, aggravated assault, battery and cruelty to children, according to jail records.
