Agency approves Fort McPherson sale to Tyler Perry

EAST POINT, Ga. – A deal to sell part of Fort McPherson to media mogul Tyler Perry was unanimously approved on Friday.

The Civilian Authority was tasked with redeveloping the shuttered Army post. The board said it was the best deal they could find and believe it will help the community.

Perry plans to build a movie studio on the 330 acres. The remaining 145 acres will become a mixed-use development, including housing, retail, historic preservation and green space.

State Sen. Vincent Fort called the sale unconstitutional. He said that Perry was getting the land at a 60 percent discount.

Petition opposes sale of Ft. McPherson to Tyler Perry

EAST POINT, Ga. -- Critics of a proposed deal to sell part of a former Army post to Tyler Perry have begun an online petition opposing the sale.

A portion of Fort McPherson is up for sale to Perry for redevelopment into a movie studio. Perry would buy 330 acres of the 475 acres total for $30 million.

Drivers sought in East Point officer hit-and-run

BUFORD, Ga. – East Point Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who injured an officer.

According to East Point Police Capt. Cliff Chandler, Officer Alton Starr was conducted a traffic stop at Winburn Drive and Batavia Street on Thursday. Before Starr had gotten out of his car, another vehicle drive through a stop sign and t-boned the officer's vehicle, Chandler said.

The impact of the collision pushed the officer's vehicle on its side.

Starr was taken to the hospital and released. He was said to be banged up, but OK.


East Point electric bills shock resident

EAST POINT, GA (WXIA) -- Living in a small apartment in East Point with her disabled mother, Tina Reese says she has been faced with monthly electric bills that have topped $500.


As she struggles to find out why the bills are so high, she's fallen behind in her payments. The second month she was in her apartment, she got hit with that electric bill that topped $500.

She lives with her disabled mother and two teen-age children who spend every other weekend with her.

East Point Police officer dies in surgery

EAST POINT, Ga. – An East Point Police officer died in surgery on Thursday.

Toure' Heywood was in need of an organ transplant after being injured in the line of duty years ago. According to a GoFundMe page, Heywood was struck by a hit-and-run driver and developed a blood clot that went undetected for years.

The family was notified on Wednesday that a donor was available in Washington D.C.

Heywood passed away on the operating, according to East Point Police Lt. Cliff Chandler.

Heywood, a Marine veteran, served with the East Point Police Department for the last five years, Chandler said.

East Point security guard found dead in parking lot

EAST POINT, Ga. -- Police are still trying to figure out who shot and killed a security guard in East Point Sunday morning.

That man, later identified as 32-year-old Antonio Spear, was found dead in his car about 300 yards from where police said someone shot him.

East Point security guard death ruled suicide

EAST POINT, Ga. -- The death of a 32-year-old security guard in East Point has been ruled a suicide, police said on Wednesday.

Antonio Spear was found dead of a gunshot wound in his car in an East Point shopping center parking lot on Sunday.

Police had said that the death was being treated as a homicide, but the medical examiner later ruled it a suicide, East Point Police Captain Cliff Chandler said Wednesday.

The medical examiner's report said that the gun was at extremely close range when it discharged.
